Freelance photographers can change topics, publications, work with new subject matter or flit from composition to composition as they see fit. Their scope need not be contained by certain assignments. If they wish to expend a certain amount of time traveling or capturing off-assignment images, they are not losing income or straying from their work objectives.Freelance photography can depend on talent, initiative, and ability to self edit or contribute on time.

Freelance photography can happen “on the side”, yet many staff photographers tend to fit their work around the content of the media channel, magazine or outlet they work for. For example, a freelance photographer on assignment to the Grand Canyon may have two weeks to shoot images and then a week or so to edit the files for submission. but an assignment staff photographer might have much more limited time and less time overall to craft entries with more compositional benefit in the digital editing and enhancement stages.

Journalistic or media coverage tends to be more contained and formal in scope, of the “snapshot” variety. These pictures are visible every day on the front page of newspapers, on television behind the newscasters as they speak, or in background or topical discussion on television programs. Journalism covers the 5 main characteristics of news; Who, What, How, When, and Why? Freelance photojournalists can submit feature and news images, yet the limitation on timeliness and relevance to editorial coverage may suspend qualification for payments of a scale that make the effort worthwhile.

Freelance photography is a way to make an independent living or part time income stream from impromptu, unassigned, and partially assigned photography orders and assignments. Freelance photographers tend to be flexible, informed about a subject or given medium, have their own camera equipment, and work well with little or no direction. Freelance photographers can be anyone who desires to make a living or build a creative photographic oeuvre for themselves or for sale and appreciation as art.

Photojournalism assignments may specify the ultimate size of the image, what publication it will appear in, and what readership it is for. Photographers can introduce new environments and subjects as they fit the assignments. But a freelance photograph and its compositional elements will be always under the jurisdiction of an editor with a prevailing journalism set of of print standards and a family readership. These limits are removed from the scope of work in the freelance arena and creative dynamics of pure freelance work.
